SERVING IN: Costa Rica, Central America
We are the Hutchins Family from White Bear Lake, Minnesota. We are John and Jill, and we have two daughters, Madeline and Mariela. Prior to serving full time in missions, I (John) ran a general contracting company and was in the industry for 17 years and Jill was a high school Spanish teacher for 12 years.
While serving in outreach ministries through our local church we felt a deep calling to go help where families are living in desperate circumstances. Following the example of Jesus, His life, and our calling in Ephesians to be “Imitators” of Christ, we left the comforts of home to serve in the mission field for one year. By 2013 after 3 months of serving we knew that this was where we were supposed to serve, and we knew we were supposed to stay! We served our first year in two different children’s homes and gained the necessary experience to open an outreach of our own. We have been blessed to serve Nicaraguan families through our Preschool “Pescaditos del Salvador” for over 4 years now!
The preschool is a venue to share Jesus with the children as well as provide education, food, baths, and clean clothes. During the coffee harvest we make over 1,000 meals per month, host 25 children per day, and serve many more children through our outreach programs. The preschool also opens a venue to share the love of Jesus to their families where we help with food, clothing, shoes, cooking items, and child care products.
As you follow and support us through the means available to you; we want to thank you in advance for helping us provide assistance to families who struggle with their basic needs. We are a 90% give back ministry, 90 cents out of every dollar to the ministry goes straight to helping the children and their families. We only use 10% of resources for administration costs. Jill and I do not receive a salary, so the personal support helps us with our rent and food!
Please feel free to contact us through any of the means provided in the upper left corner of this page, or through Globe!
“To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.” 1 Peter 2:21
During the month of June, we received a group of fourteen students and five leaders from Daybreak Church of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. It was a very full week with many events. COVID created difficulties concerning events and event planning, however, we were able to work around the protocols in order to host our outreach events. During the week we invited youth from the community.
Thanks to you, our ministry partners, we are able to assist the families in our programs with resources for their children like diapers and formula, child care practices education, and Biblical teachings that apply to their lives. In these last few months the COVID restrictions have eased and we have been able to host 37 face to face meetings per month with the mom’s in our program for families in high risk circumstances. Our group is growing at an incredible rate! We have seen our attendance double in just the last year.
Missions Teams are already signing up for this summer! Our goal is to create discipleship opportunities for motivated teams. We are excited to announce that we are open and receiving missions teams June and July.
This year has been one for the records. We started with the Covid scare which changed much of the way we do normal activities. We started construction on a permanent location. We were successful in gaining PANI (Department of Child Welfare) approval as a legitimate education and family care facility.
The Preschool this year looks very different. We are compliant with the 22 pages of protocols set forth by the Health Department for childcare/preschool centers! This has been a lot of work as well as a strain on the budget. We have also filled a full time staff position dedicated only to cleaning and disinfecting our center, expanding our budget needs $600 per month. Thankfully we have been able to gain the necessary health approvals to open without delay!
This has been an exciting year with many changes. We had five groups visit with a total of almost one hundred visitors in eight weeks! In these eight weeks we distributed over 1500 shoes to children in need in our area! Our staff did an amazing job at feeding all of our missionary guests making over 1,200 meals!
